Malaise is an odd duck as a scarred to heck hermit, but I wanted to explore what would make his close enough to Raven to make him an admin. He has lots of knowledge and is infatuated with her, but there is still a part of him which still mourns his dead wife.
I was thinking he joined Team Shard not because Raven reminded him of his dead wife, but she told him to get on with his life. He needed some purpose to get obsessed over since the object of his affections were gone. Perhaps his existence reminds Raven of the pain of loving and losing rather than never loving at all. Maybe a Phantom of the Opera type of relationship which only teeters the line of mentor/student and romantic since he actually realizes that she values her freedom.
Perhaps he acts as the brains of the operation with all of his schooling, but too ugly for Evan to take notice. He's the tactician of the group, coming up with new and inventive ways to put a Pokemon's abilities to sinister trials.

I thought this was fitting because it was strong without being too romantic. Since he's diseased, she might not want to get too close to him... that and if it relapses, he'll die anyway, so getting too close might not be her best interest even though they care about one another.
